Enjoy an easy trail in a rich beech forest in the company of woodpeckers and forest fruits
Chortiatis Mt., at only 25 klms away from the city, is worth a visit for anyone who loves the forest, it’s smells and refreshing feeling. Peaking at 1,201 m. Chortiatis is densely forested with chestnut, oak and beech, especially in the north side, where one can have a stunning view of Lakes Koronia and Volvi. There are numerous easy trails and access to their starting point is easy, even by public bus.
In combination with the nearby Asvestochori hills the area offers a good list of birds, such as woodpeckers (Black, Syrian, Great -spotted, Middle – spotted, Lesser – spotted and Green Woodpecker), raptors (Levant Sparrow, Long-legged and Steppe Buzzards, Lesser – spotted Eagle and quite often White-tailed Sea eagle), and passerines such as Rock Nuthatch, Blue Rock Thrush, Sombre tit, Subalpine and Eastern Orphean Warblers, Masked Shrike and Ortolan Bunting.
In autumn Chortiatis is a popular spot for collecting chestnuts and mushrooms.
