Explore Koronia & Volvi Lakes
A very diverse area with two large lakes, surrounded by hilly and mountainous regions
This is one of the largest National Parks in Greece, encompassing a wide variety of habitats. Two freshwater lakes, marshes, estuaries, extensive maquis and broadleaved forests, rocky outcrops, monumental trees and a well preserved farmland area lined with tall hedgerows, comprise a rich mosaic hosting more than 300 species of birds. This is one of the best areas of Lesser Kestrel, Turtle dove and Roller, at less than 20 klm from the city center!

Highlights of the area include:
RAPTORS such as the Lesser-Spotted Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Levant Sparrowhawk, Lesser Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon and Long-legged Buzzard, while the Golden Eagle and Lanner Falcon are also nesting in the area but harder to spot.
WATERBIRDS and herons such as the Black Stork, White Stork, Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Squaco and Night Heron, Glossy Ibis, Ferruginus Duck, Black-necked Grebe, Stone Curlew, Black-winged Stilt
WOODPECKERS such as: Grey-Headed, Green, Black, Middle-spotted, Great-spotted, Lesser-Spotted, White-backed, Syrian20
OWLS such as: Little, Barn, Scops, Eagle, Tawny
PASSERINES and more such as: Roller, Bee-Eater, Turtle dove, Alpine Swift, Calandra lark, Ortolan Bunting, Masked Shrike, Great Reed, Barred, Subalpine and Eastern Orphean Warblers, Sombre tit and occasionally the Great-spotted cuckoo.
Furthermore at the coastal strip of Strymonikos Gulf, there are good opportunities to observe SEABIRDS such as the Shag which breeds in a colony in the island of Kafkanas, and the Yelkouan Shearwater which forms sizeable rafts in this area.
